THE UNDERSTORY
Lars Baggenstos and Sandy Kunze
Beneath the forest floor, roots stretch in every direction—holding, feeding, remembering.
This exhibition digs into what’s usually unseen: the networks, legacies, and entanglements below the surface.
With sculpture and paint, The Understory explores connection, communication, and the weight of what lies beneath

Sandy Kunze – Inheritance
Sandy’s abstract paintings invite close, quiet observation. What may first appear as solid black reveals soft lines, tonal shifts, and layers of detail just beneath the surface. Like roots communicating underground, her works suggest connection, silence, and memory—what is carried forward, and what remains just out of sight. |
Lars Baggenstos – Royalty
In Royalty, Lars presents human figures with inverted root systems in place of heads. Carved from wood, these striking forms speak to legacy, lineage, and extraction. The roots—once grounding the forest—now crown the figures, referencing both the literal royalties paid in the logging industry and deeper questions about what holds us up, or weighs us down. |
